The first major sleep regression typically occurs around the 4-month mark. This can be a tough transition for families, as your baby’s sleep patterns shift permanently. During this time, you may notice more frequent night wakings, shorter naps, and general fussiness.
This is not a step backward—it’s a sign of growth. Your baby’s brain is maturing, and sleep is becoming more structured. The key during this time is consistency. Stick to your bedtime routines, offer comfort when needed, and try to avoid introducing sleep habits that you may later want to change (like constant rocking or feeding to sleep if that’s not your long-term plan).
Later regressions are often tied to major physical and cognitive milestones, like crawling, walking, or learning to talk. These leaps are exciting for your baby—but they can be exhausting for you.
Remember: Short Naps Aren’t Forever – we know how hard it can be when your baby isn’t sleeping as you hoped. But rest assured—short naps, regressions, and sleep disruptions are all part of the journey. With time, support, and a little guidance, your baby’s sleep will evolve.

What About Separation Anxiety?
Around 8–10 months, many babies start experiencing separation anxiety. This can lead to disrupted sleep as your baby becomes more aware of—and concerned by—your absence. Offer extra love and reassurance during the day and at bedtime. Gentle, predictable routines and lots of cuddles help your little one feel secure, even when you’re out of sight.
We know how important sleep is to the whole family so we’re here to support you on this journey. If you need 1:1 support our sleep consultant Fiona is here to help you. Reach out to her via the ‘contact an experts’ tab on your membership dashboard.
